Talley advances at US Women's Amateur

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Alabama had two players advance to the round of 32 on Wednesday at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Charleston. 
 
Sophomore Emma Talley and redshirt freshman Cammie Gray advanced to Thursday's action while senior Stephanie Meadow was defeated 3 and 2 by Republic of Ireland's Leona Maguire. 
 
Talley, from Princeton, Ky., who was the No. 3 seed for match play after tying for second in stroke play, posted a 3 and 1 victory over Lydia Choi to advance to the round of 32. Talley took control of the match by winning the fifth hole with par. She increased her lead to 2 up on the seventh and 3 up on the ninth. She made par on the 156-yard par 3 17th hole to close out the win. 
 
Gray, a native of Northport, Ala., who won the Alabama State Amateur in July, defeated Simin Feng of the People's Republic of China 4 and 3. Feng is ranked third nationally by the American Junior Golf Association. Gray had a 5 up lead at the turn after a birdie on the par 5 ninth. She gave a hole back on the 11th and 14th but then won the 13th with par and closed the match out on the 15th by halving with par.
