There's a full field for the 77th Cobb Championships

For the last several years, the Irvin Cobb Championships at Paxton Park have grown in popularity.  This year that was apparent when the field for the tournament filled up in record time.

Paxton Park Club Pro Danny Mullen says it took just eleven days to complete a full field of 44 pros and 91 amateur players.  Mullen attributes that to word of mouth from other area tournaments.

Players say  the competition at the Cobb keeps getting better every year.  It also helps that the entry fee isn't too steep to compete.

"It's a fun event," Massac County alum Mason Jacobs said.  Jacobs is making his pro debut this weekend at the Cobb. "There are so many local people that come out to watch," Jacobs added. "It's good for a local pro to get a chance to get that tour event feel."
"The bad thing about this is we have a long waiting list to get in," Mullen said. "There are a lot of good players we'd like to see in the event that we can't accommodate. All I can do really is to encourage some of them to try to get in sooner next year so we can get them in the tournament."
The 77th Irvin Cobb Championships start Saturday morning at 6:24am at Paxton Park.
