Union City reflects on 2009 state championship game
UNION CITY, TN -- While preparing for the state championship game this Friday, Union City's Darren Bowling has evaluated his team by watching footage from the 2009 state championship game.
"I looked at it several times in the playoffs," Bowling said. "I wanted to see where we were as a team, and how we were progressing."
Most of the Union City players don't need to be reminded of the 2009 game, because most of them where there.
"I remember sitting on the left side of the stands next to the band and going crazy," said junior quarterback Garrett Walton.
For Bowling, the memory that stands out from that game was having his son play quarterback. For the players on this years team who were there, it was one play that stood out.
"The only thing I remember is kicking the game winning field goal," junior lineman Tristan Jernigan said.
"I remember the drive, and Jorge's kick," said Walton.
And by watching that game, they knew eventually they would make it back.
"I thought we could," said Jernigan. "I didn't realize just how hard it would be to get back here. I think we can win it though."
"When you have 7th or 8th graders in the stands watching that game, it begins to put a fire in them," said Bowling.
And this week in the stands, there could be more future Golden Tornadoes wanting to do the same thing.
