Youth wrestling club growing in Mayfield
MAYFIELD, KY -- Parents from all over the area are watching their kids hit the wrestling mats thanks in part to the Purchase Area Pounders. A new youth wrestling club founded by Scott Raney.
"All of our kids are in their first year of wrestling," Raney said. "No one had any experience when we started back on October 15th."
In their first week of sign ups over 40 area kids signed up.
"It was crazy how many people wanted to get involved and how much everyone has liked it," Raney said. "I have several moms tell me that their kids will pack their clothes and say that they need to go wrestle. Its amazing."
In just a short time the Pounders have already seen their share of success. The most recent coming last month at the state tournament.
"We have seven kids that went to the Kentucky State Tournament and placed in the top four out of one thousand kids," Raney said. "They were able to do that against well established teams."
But what Raney sees as an even bigger accomplishment is that the kids have fallen in love with the sport he grew up with.
"The kids show up and shake hands with their opponents," Raney said. "Then they go wrestle. I'm just so proud of what they have done so far."
"I play a lot of football and this is the only sport I don't have to have pads." Pounder Hunter Vlach said. "I get to compete and show my beast mode. Its just a lot of fun."
