Miners beat Grizzlies 4-1

Marion, IL - Blake Nation pitched 6 2/3 innings to earn his fourth win of the season and stay undefeated as the Miners defeated the Grizzlies 4-1.  Nation retired eighteen out of his last nineteen batters and twelve in a row.  The Miners recorded 14 hits and are now 16-13 on the season.
 
Gateway scored their only run of the game in the top of the first inning off Miners starter Blake Nation as catcher Landon Hernandez grounded into a fielder's choice that scored second baseman Jonathan Johnson.  
 
Southern Illinois scored two runs off Grizzlies starter Tucker Jensen in the bottom of the third inning as Gerardo Avila hit a RBI single and Ken Gregory hit a RBI double to give the Miners a 2-1 lead.  The Miners added a run off Jensen in the bottom of the fourth inning as Jon Eisen hit a RBI single.  Carlos Colmenares added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning off Jensen to give the Miners a 4-1 lead.  
 
Dayne Quist pitched a 1/3 of an inning of relief in the seventh.  Ronald Uviedo pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Brandon Cunniff earned his eighth save of the season as he struck out two batters in the top of the ninth inning.  
 
The Miners look for the series sweep tomorrow night as they send Preston Vancil (3-0, 2.03 ERA) to the mound against Tim Brown (3-2, 2.80 ERA).  First pitch gets underway at 7:05 pm.  Fans can tune in to the Miners Radio Network beginning at 6:45 pm with Mike Ventola on the Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show.
