Miners blast Greys for victory

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners continued their home dominance in 2013 as they defeated the Frontier Greys 7-2.  The Miners are now 40-33 on the season.  Their home record is now 28-12 on the season.  Miners reliever Pete Perez earned the victory as he pitched two scoreless innings in relief off three hits and recorded two strikeouts. 

Southern Illinois jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Greys starter Matt Costello as Carlos Mendez hit a RBI groundout to score Cory Harrilchak.  The Miners scored another run in the bottom of the fifth inning off Costello as Danny Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly to score Jereme Milons and give the Miners a 2-0 lead.  The Frontier Greys tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh inning off Bradshaw. 

Bradshaw pitched six innings and allowed two runs off seven hits and two walks.  He recorded four strikeouts in the no-decision.   Southern Illinois exploded for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off Greys relievers Ryan Berry and Ryan Woolley to take a 6-2 lead.  With the bases loaded, Steven Liddle hit a pinch hit two-run double off Berry to give the Miners a 4-2 lead.  Danny Hernandez scored a run off a RBI double hit by Andrew Cohn off Woolley and Jon Eisen brought in a run on a fielder's choice to cap off the inning. 

The Miners added another run off Greys reliever Jon Shepard to take a 7-2 lead.  John Colella pitched a scoreless ninth inning. 

The Miners and Greys return to action on Sunday for Youth Clinic Night at Rent One Park as first pitch will get underway at 5:05 pm.
