Miners lose series finale

Marion, IL - The Miners fell short on Sunday as they were defeated by the River City Rascals 6-4.  The Miners are now 29-22 on the season.  Miners starting pitcher Cody Hall (2-0) suffered the loss as he allowed three runs in six innings of work. 

River City jumped ahead 1-0 off Miners starter Cody Hall in the top of the second inning as designated hitter Brian Aanderud hit a RBI single.  The Rascals added two more runs off Hall as catcher Danny Canela hit a RBI double and centerfielder Curran Redal hit a sacrifice fly. 

Carlos Colmenares hit a two -run homerun off Rascals starter Ray Hanson (1-0) in the bottom of the fifth inning, his third of the season to bring the Miners within one run, 3-2.  The Rascals added a run off Miners reliever John Colella in the top of the seventh inning as shortstop Johnny Morales scored on a wild pitch. 

The Rascals scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning off Miners reliever Pete Perez to take a 6-2 lead as third baseman Steve Carillo hit a RBI single and Curran Redal scored on a sacrifice bunt by desiganted hitter Brian Aanderud. 

Southern Illinois scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning off Rascals closer and former Miners Gabriel Shaw to take a 6-4 as Jason Ganek hit a sacrifice fly to score Carlos Mendez and Cannon Lester hit a RBI double to score Cory Harrilchak. 

John Colella pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed one unearned run off one hit.  He walked three batters.  Pete Perez allowed two runs (one earned) off one hit and one walk. 

The first half of the regular season has ended.  The Miners will resume the second half on Friday July 19th as they will begin a six game road trip in Joliet at Silver Cross Field.
