Miners offense explodes in win over Joliet

Joliet, IL - The Miners recorded thirteen hits and scored eleven runs as they defeated the Joliet Slammers 11-2 at Silver Cross Field on Sunday.  Miners starting pitcher Dayne Quist was superb as well in his outing as he earned his fifth win by pitching seven innings and only allowed one run off five hits with four strikeouts.  The Miners are now 30-24 on the season.  With the win, Miners manager Mike Pinto is tied for fourth all-time on the wins list in the Frontier League. 

Two games in a row the Miners offense exploded in the top of the first inning as they took an early 8-0 lead against the Slammers.  The Miners offense chased Slammers starter Matt Dillon after eight batters and recording one out.  Gerardo Avila hit a two RBI single to put the first runs on board.  Ken Gregory added a RBI single and Phil Butler hit a RBI single.  Cannon Lester whacked a two RBI double and Logan Brumley recorded his first hit as a Miner off Slammers reliever Jonathan Gonzalez, a RBI single.  Steven Liddle capped off the inning with a RBI triple off Gonzalez. 

Southern Illinois tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning to take a 9-0 lead as Gerardo Avila scored on an error by third baseman Grant DeBruin on a ball hit by Phil Butler off Gonzalez.  Joliet scored one run off Dayne Quist in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the Slammers on the board, 9-1. 

The Miners added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning off Slammers reliever Chris DeBoo as Ken Gregory hit a RBI single to score Jereme Milons and Cory Harrilchak hit a sacrifice fly to score Gerardo Avila and give the Miners a 11-1 lead.  Joliet scored a run off Miners reliever Michael Carden in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the Miners lead to nine runs, 11-2. 

Race Parmenter closed out the ninth inning as he recorded two strikeouts in a scoreless effort. 

The Miners continue their road trip as they head to Avon, Ohio to play the Lake Erie Crushers at All Pro Freight Stadium.  First pitch will get underway on Monday at 6:05 pm.
