12/26 Bidwell's Blog: A breakdown of this week's AP Poll
All 65 AP voters had the Racers on their ballots this week.
For the first time since Murray State started receiving votes in the Associated Press college basketball poll this year, all 65 voters had the 13-0 Racers on their ballots. Here is the breakdown of the 65 voters in this week's AP poll:
15th: 1 vote (Steven Bradley, Seneca (SC) Daily Journal)
16th: 0 votes
17th: 2 votes
18th: 4 votes
19th: 13 votes
20th: 12 votes
21st: 11 votes
22nd: 7 votes
23rd: 7 votes
24th: 6 votes
25th: 2 votes
The best days of Murray State's resume building for the postseason are behind them. Remember last week when the Racers RPI was 6? It's now 20 -- and it will continue to go south as we go forward because of the overall weakness of the Ohio Valley Conference.
Murray State's biggest resume assets are all those non-conference wins they have in their pocket. They can only hope those teams they have beaten continue to win games. What were quality wins in November and December won't necessarily look as good in March.
In terms of seeding for the NCAA Tournament, the committee will look at wins vs. Top 25, Top 50, Top 100 and Top 150 in the RPI.
As for those non-conference teams they've beaten and their RPI:
3. Southern Miss
134. Arkansas State
Their other six wins are against teams with an RPI of 157 and higher. For the record, aside from the Bracket Busters game, the Racers won't play another team in the regular season whose RPI is currently better than 190.
These numbers will continue to be fluid throughout the year. If Southern Miss, Dayton and Memphis can end up in the Top 50, the Racers' postseason resume will look much more impressive after they work their way through the OVC.
