Murray State’s Isaiah Canaan was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week Monday in voting conducted by the league’s sports information directors.

Canaan, a senior from Biloxi, Miss., helped the Racers to two wins last week over previously OVC undefeated Belmont by a 79-74 score and a 69-48 win over Tennessee State. Canaan, who has ranked in the top-10 in the nation in scoring all season, matched his season average of 21.0 points for the week.

Showing a flare for the dramatic, it was Canaan’s three-pointer with 33 seconds left that broke a 74-74 tie and gave MSU the win over Belmont. He had 26 points against the Bruins marking his 31st game with 20 or more points. In the Saturday win over TSU, Canaan was his efficient self with 16 points.

Canaan set up shot at the free throw line repeatedly against the Bruins and Tigers as he hit 21-of-25 for 84 percent. He shot 38 percent from three-point range (5-of-13) and also added 10 assists and four steals.

The weekly OVC award marks the second time this season and ninth time in his career that Canaan has been so honored.
