Defense is the focus at practice for Murray State

MURRAY, KY -- When you have six new players practicing for the first time together, there are a lot of things that need attention. But for the Murray State Racers one thing stands out.

"Defense, defense, defense," says senior guard Dexter Fields. "Coach has been preaching that this entire time."

Under head coach Steve Prohm, and even before him, the Racers have been known to excel on defense.

"Both 31 win seasons we have had in the last few years, we scored off of defense," Prohm said. "Pressuring people, deflections and putting ourselves in great positions."

Last year, they limited opponents to just 42 percent shooting, which was first in the Ohio Valley Conference. To do it again, the newcomers will have to learn.

"The biggest thing is making them understand the culture we have here," Prohm said. "We have to play good defense if we are going to play in March."

"Everyone of them can score at any given time," Fields said. "But to win championships, we know we have to play defense."

And Fields has made sure they put in the time.

"You have to play it or they are not going to get on the floor," Fields said. "I am getting that into their heads and they are starting to get it."

"We just have to rep it, rep it, rep it," Prohm said. "They are new so it will take some time."

And time is what they have, with a little more than two weeks until their first game.
