DICKSON, Tenn. – Defending champion Jacksonville State has a three stroke lead after round one of the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship being played at the GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson.
The Gamecocks used a balanced attack and have one of the four individual leaders after 18 holes on a course that is playing 5,964 yards and is a par 72.
The Gamecocks combined for a score of 305 which put them three strokes ahead of Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky who each had rounds of 308. Murray State is four shots behind that duo in fourth place (312). Belmont is fifth (315) and is followed by Austin Peay (316), Tennessee Tech (328), SIUE (329), Eastern Illinois (336) and Tennessee State (381).
This year’s field features 10 teams, the largest field in OVC Women’s Golf Championship history.
Individually four schools have a player that carded a round of 74 (+2) and share the individual lead after 18 holes. That group includes Jacksonville State senior Ornella Arrizzon (one of two medalists from last year), Morehead State freshman Katie Rice, Eastern Kentucky freshman Becky Sharpe and Belmont senior Janet Steen.
Overall four other players are within a shot of the lead and 12 total players are within four shots of the lead.
In addition to Arrizon, JSU had two other golfers in the top five, as Maya Parsons and Melania Bajo Geijo each had scores of 75 (+3) on Sunday and are tied for fifth.
In her first OVC Tournament Rice led the Morehead State attack to share in the lead after round one. Freshman Anna Appert Lund, the OVC stroke average leader entering the tournament, had a round of 77 (+5) and is tied for 12th. Overall all five MSU golfers are within six shots of the lead.
Sharpe’s round led Eastern Kentucky while fellow freshman Anna Gleixner had a round of 75 (+3) and is one shot back in fifth place.
Murray State placed three players in the Top 10 after round one as Alli Weaver is tied for fifth (75) while Delaney Howson and Alexandra Lennartsson are tied for ninth (76).
Playing in its first OVC Championship, Belmont was led Steen who had the round of 74 (+2) and is tied for the lead. Sydney Hudson is two shots behind her teammate in ninth place (76).
Austin Peay was paced by freshman Jessica Cathey who had a six-over round of 78; she currently sits in 14th place. Tala Mumford and Lauren Bond each had rounds of 79 (+7) and are tied for 17th.
Tennessee Tech was led by Madalyn Everts who had a round of 77 (+5); she is currently in a tie for 12th place.
Playing in its first OVC Championship SIUE was led by Brooks White who carded a round of 78 (+6) to sit in 14th place.
Eastern Illinois was led by Lauren Williams who had a round of 81 (+9) and is in 25th place.
Tennessee State was paced by Kelly Merkel who fired a round of 85 (+13); she is currently 34th after 18 holes.
