MAYFIELD, Ky. – As summer winds down, and the 2012-13 school year approaches, Mid-Continent University has continued to reach out into the community both by sending representatives out, and by opening the campus to visitors. On Monday, one such group of visitors enjoyed a morning of mentorship on the campus.

Approximately 25 children from the Washington Street Baptist Church’s mentorship program came to the Mayfield campus, where they spent the morning, hearing from among others, Mid-Continent University men’s basketball coach Winston Bennett. Bennett spoke to the group, engaging the crowd of youngsters in an interactive presentation on daring to “Dream Like a Fool.” The former University of Kentucky star  - who also played in the NBA for three seasons – encouraged the group that no matter what others may say, dreams can be achieved through hard work and perseverance.

“I wanted the kids to know that even when others may say ‘you can’t’ or ‘that’s impossible,’” Bennett explained, “that through Faith, determination, and hard work, they can achieve their dreams.”

Bennett was the second speaker of the day, following the University’s Campus Pastor Justin Carrico. Carrico’s message to the kids centered around trusting in God, and working together within His purposes to achieve success. Using several illustrations, Carrico showed the kids how when even one person chooses not to do the right thing, the results can be disastrous.

The students who took part in Monday’s activities were a part of the mentorship program of Washington Street Baptist Church. The children ranged from second, through fifth grade students.
