MARTIN, TN -- After playing two ranked FCS opponents and Boise State, UT Martin is 2-1, and ranked 23rd in the Sports Network Poll heading into conference play.
"The conference games are what counts," Skyhawks head coach Jason Simpson said. "Those other wins only help at the end of the year after the conference games are played."
This week's game against Southeast Missouri is being treated as a must win.
"You lose this week and SEMO is 1-0, and we are 0-1," Simpson said. "Then no one remembers that we beat two ranked teams earlier in the year."
In those first three games, the Skyhawks offense has looked good at times, but not how Simpson would like.
"Anytime you only have 300 something yards, that is not what you are looking for," Simpson said. "We have left a lot on the field."
Coming off of a bye week the Skyhawks worked on their passing game. Something Simpson thinks is important, given the fact that most OVC teams can score a lot of points.
"They''re going to score at least in the 30's," Simpson said. "That is just the way it is in our league now, and you have to match that. Running the ball isn't going to get it done by itself."
Despite all of that, Simpson believes the Skyhawks should be getting a little more attention. Especially since they are still not ranked in the FCS Coaches Poll.
"It doesn't matter now," Simpson said. "But it can seven to eight weeks from now when you are fighting to get an at-large spot in the playoffs."
