MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin football team added 17 players today during National Signing Day. Head coach Jason Simpson introduced each player and showed video clips during a press conference in the Boling University Center on campus.
Among the 17 signees are six from Tennessee, three each from Georgia and Missouri, two each from Alabama and Mississippi and one from Illinois. The list includes nine offensive players, seven defensive players and a specialist (kicker).
“We had to address some immediate needs and some needs for the future,” UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson.
The Skyhawks must fill voids left by quarterback Derek Carr, running backs Jason McNair and Tevin Barksdale, wide receiver Quentin Sims, safety Julius McNair and defensive lineman Montori Hughes.
Carr was the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Year, while Sims and Hughes were All-OVC selections and All-Americans.
“We had to be very selective,” Simpson said.
The Skyhawks finished the 2012 season with an 8-3 overall record and a 6-2 Ohio Valley Conference worksheet. The team also earned a share of the Sgt. York Challenge Trophy, their second in three years. The Skyhawks sport the best record, 11-7, of the four Tennessee schools vying for the annual challenge trophy.
The Skyhawks will open the 2013 season Aug. 29 at UT Chattanooga. Follow the Skyhawks at www.UTMSports.com.
