Canaan named to Cousy Award watch list
Murray State senior Isaiah Canaan was named the watch list for the 2013 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
Canaan, from Biloxi, Miss., was a top-5 finalists last spring for the Cousy Award that is given to the best point guard in college basketball for the last seven years. The yearly honor is named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy.
Canaan was a seven-time All-America selection last season as a junior and has been named as a preseason pick as many times going into the 2012-13 season. Canaan has been named to 12 different preseason teams including recently being named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top-50.
Canaan is the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Player of the Year and started the week seventh in the nation with a scoring average of 21 points per game. He’s currently 10th on the MSU all-time scoring list with an excellent chance to finish his collegiate career as the sixth member of the MSU 2000-Point Club. He has 1,584 points heading into Saturday’s game at Dayton.
This Cousy watch list starts off with 85 candidates and then narrows it to 20 just after New Year’s Day. The list will get trimmed to 10 at the first of February with the list then whittled to five by March. A selection committee appointed by the Naismith Hall of Fame will review the final five candidates to decide the 2013 winner which will be announced at the NCAA Final Four in Atlanta, Ga.
