Racer defense is key for run at OVC Tournament title
MURRAY, KY - This weekend Murray State Head Coach Steve Prohm and his staff broke down the stats from their seven losses this season. Once they looked at their conference losses, one thing stood out.
"We are not defending well in those four losses," Coach Prohm said. "Shooting percentage is just way to high from the field and from three. Also, we are not shooting the ball well."
Against Belmont and Tennessee State, the biggest games of the year, the Racers defense played well. Then against SIU Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois they struggled.
"We didn't have the same type of urgency we did a week ago," Senior Guard Isaiah Canaan said. "We cant play down to the level of competition. Whoever we are playing we have to guard them."
"The league is better, no question," Prohm said. "We left a few out there for the taking because of our approach and mentality, but this team knows what its capable of.
What they are capable of is winning the OVC Tournament Title, but will have to fix everything by the time March arrives.
"The test of the team is how they respond," Prohm said. "Like I said all season long and even last year, when we have been thrown into the fire we have responded and expect that now."
