Racers assistant William Small making his mark at Murray State
MURRAY, KY-- If you sit in on a Murray State basketball practice, it doesn't take long to notice the booming voice of assistant coach William Small. Although he can get intense on the court, he's actually very quiet and calm off of it.
"He's just like everybody else," said junior forward Jarvis Williams. "Down to Earth and he just has fun."
"If you need anything, you need to come in at two o'clock in the morning to get some shots up, he'll get out of his bed and come do it for you," said Jonathan Fairell, a junior forward for the Racers. "He'll watch film with you, break the whole film down, he's a great guy."
One thing many of the players didn't know is that Small can be a funny man. That's right, he likes to make jokes, and most of the time, at the players expense.
"I might find out they got a girl they're dating or something I might overhear in the locker room," Small admitted with a smile. "I'll repeat it in front of everybody, and they're like man coach knows that? So I get a laugh out of it."
"It's just like a whole bunch of jokes on everybody and anybody," said Fairell. "You never know who he's going to get, but he's got a whole bunch of good jokes under his belt."
But the favorite part of his job as an assistant the last twenty years, is watching his players grow up to lead successful lives.
