Countdown to Gridrion Glory: Union City Golden Tornadoes

Many teams go into a high school football season looking to win a state title.  Not many go into a season trying to defend one.  But that is the case in Union City.  The Golden Tornadoes are coming of a magical 2009 season that culminated with a win over South Pittsburg in TSSAA Class 1A state title game.

That title did come with a price.  The '09 team was senior laden, so replacing that talent will not be easy.  But it won't be just talent the Tornadoes are trying to replace.  It's also the experience.

There are just four seniors and six juniors on the 2010 roster, meaning there will have to be a lot of underclassmen step up this season.

Senior Chase Bowling does return at quarterback, but his role will change.  Last season he spent much of his time handing the ball off to a big, strong stable of running backs.  This year, Bowling will be asked to throw the ball much more.  Head coach Darren Bowling says they've thrown the ball 15-20 times a game in a couple scrimmages this year.  That's a major change from 2009 when Union City rarely threw the football.

The Golden Tornadoes also are lacking in size, which was a major advantage they had on teams in 2009.  Bowling says this year's team is much smaller, but much quicker and they plan on utilizing that speed with the passing game.

Union City will open their season on August 27 at Trigg County.
