Hazard beats Mayfield in 1A title game
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - Hazard compiled just 237 yards offensively but forced five Mayfield turnovers and beat the Cardinals 24-6 for the school's first state championship in Friday's Class 1A game. Running back Zack Blanton, who had two pass attempts all season, took the majority of snaps at quarterback for the Bulldogs (12-2). A 28-yard touchdown pass to Austin Johnson gave Hazard the lead for good in the second quarter. Mayfield (14-1) fell short of a repeat state title, as quarterback Jake Guhy went 15-of-35 for 191 yards and was intercepted five times. Hazard took a 10-6 halftime lead on a field goal as time expired, extended that on a 4-yard Evan Whitaker run in the third quarter and sealed the win on B.J. Combs' interception returned for a touchdown with 2:57 left. Follow WPSD Sports on Twitter by clicking here. Follow WPSD Sports on Facebook by clicking here. |
