Elverado asks Du Quoin about possible football Co-Op
Elkville, IL-- For the more than a decade, Elverado High School in southern Illinois has Co-Oped with Trico High School during the football season. Now that contract is up, so Elverado has two options. Either travel 100 miles to play teams the same size, or Co-Op with someone else. So Elverado school board members have reached out to Du Quoin, just six miles up the road.
Representatives from Du Quoin's school board went to a special meeting at Elverado High School on Tuesday, to talk about the potential partnership.
Du Quoin's Superintendent Dr. Gary Kelly says the Co-Op would help declining enrollment that both schools are experiencing, but there will be growing pains if it happens.
"Putting the pieces of the puzzle together, we're going to have some bumps in the road," Kelly admitted. "We think we can work those things out, and make it work for both schools. But I think the key is, are we doing good things for the kids? And this could be a good thing for kids at both schools."
One of the biggest concerns during Tuesday night's meeting, centered around how Elverado's name would be represented.
"As long as we're still recognized as Elverado, and what we can bring to the table, so that we don't lose our school identity," said Elverado school board president Brandon Funk.
Elverado supporters suggest a "DQE" logo, or something that includes Elverado in the name.
"If their board doesn't want to do that, and that would put a stop to what we're trying to do here, than I don't think that's something we should hold out for," said sophomore Keaton Tyner. "We should just put all the other things aside, and make sure that we get to play football, first and foremost."
And that's exactly what both sides are interested in, with a goal of having the Co-Op completed in time for the 2014 season.
Dr. Kelly also said Tuesday night that although long-time Indians head coach Al Martin is retiring from teaching, he's still interested in coaching, and that he's on board with the partnership with Elverado.
