MCU women's team loses 101-69 at Hannibal-LaGrange

HANNIBAL, Mo. – Hannibal-LaGrange College (1-0) led 51-32 at halftime and out-scored Mid-Continent University (0-3), 50-37, in the second half and posted a 101-69 victory over the Cougars in Saturday, November 6 collegiate basketball action in Hannibal, Missouri. Three HLGC players reached double figures in the first half and five totaled 10 or more points.

Mid-Continent travels to Barbourville, Kentucky for a non-conference clash with Union College, Tuesday, November 9, tipping off at 4:30 p.m. Central time.

Junior guard Shanice Martin (Reno, NV/Hug HS/Feather River CC) totaled a season-high 16 points and had 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Junior reserve guard Nicki Dewitt (Louisville, KY/Atherton HS) scored 14 points, hitting 4 of 6 three-point attempts, and also collected 3 rebounds. Freshman forward Stephanie Malone (Louisville, Ky./Iroquois HS) added 10 points and 6 rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal, and junior guard Holli Daily (Gainesboro, TN/Jackson County HS/Roane State CC) contributed 9 points, one three-pointer, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Junior forward Heather George (Morristown, TN/Morristown West HS/Roane State CC) battled foul trouble in the second half and added 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and one blocked shot.

MCU shot .381 (24-63) from the field for the game, made 8 of 22 three-point attempts (.364) and 13 of 20 free throws and committed 23 turnovers, blocked 3 HLGC shots and stole the ball 5 times. The Cougars shot .438 (14-32) from the field in the second half.

Hannibal-LaGrange shot .488 (20-41) from the field in the first half and built a 51-32 lead by halftime. Guard Natasha Bonner led the Trojans with 19 points on 8 of 16 shots and 3 of 8 three-pointers, and already had 12 points by halftime. Bonner also had 7 assists, 2 rebounds and 3 steals. Forward Nicole Villalobos scored 18 points, 12 in the first half, made 8 of 13 shots, and gathered a game-high 14 rebounds, 8 in the second half. Guard Kayla Hruby added 16 points, 12 in the first half, and had 7 assists, 2 rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal.

Two other Trojans reserve guards, Sindy Chavez and Kelsey Anderson, each scored 10 points. Chavez also pulled down 7 rebounds, and Anderson gathered 4 boards and made one three-pointer. Guard Kerry McDermott came through with 7 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals off the HLGC bench.

Hannibal-LaGrange shot .480 (36-75) from the field for the game, made 6 of 20 three-point attempts (.300) and 23 of 35 free throws (.657) and committed just 11 turnovers, blocked 2 MCU shots and stole the ball 11 times.
