WPSD Sports

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Miners beat the Beach Bums, 8-3, earning Southern Illinois their 200th franchise win. Nate Hall led the charge, going 5-for-5 from the plate with 2 RBIs. Stephen Head added his eighth home run of the season and knocked in three more RBI’s, giving him 41 RBIs on the season. Joe Augustine went a career-high seven and one-third innings, grabbing his seventh win of the year. All but two of the Miners starters had two hits on Tuesday night from Wuerfel Stadium. The Miners move their impressive record to 37-6 on the season.

Nate Hall had five hits in five at-bats and helped ensure the win over Traverse City on Tuesday. Stephen Head had two hits, including his sixth inning bomb. Head is making a strong case to be in the home run derby during the All-Star week from Rent One Park. Ernie Banks returned to starting line-up from the injured list without a trace of rust, as he had two hits and scored once. Jereme Milons, Brendan Akashian, Tyler Bullock and Michael Stalter all added two hits a piece. Southern Illinois scored their eight runs on 18 total hits.

Joe Augustine had the longest outing of his professional career, going seven and one-third innings, allowing three runs on five hits and added five strikeouts. Augustine (7-0) earned his league leading seventh win of the season and remains undefeated in 2010. He allowed a team leading seventh home run to Traverse City’s Chase Burch that ended Augustine’s outing in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Beach Bums All-Star pitcher, Kevin Reese took the loss as he allowed six runs on 12 hits. Reese moves to 5-4 on the season, throwing five and two-third innings on the night, while yielding one walk and adding two strikeouts.

Ryan Kussmaul (3-1, 2.70) will take the mound against Beach Bums southpaw Jonny Bravo (1-0, 2.48) for a 6:05 p.m. Central time first pitch from Wuerfel Stadium. Kussmaul was extraordinary in his last start against Oakland County, striking out 12 batters through nine innings of scoreless baseball. He looks for much of the same, as the Miners go for their professional baseball best 38th win on Wednesday night.
