PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Southern Illinois football team had the second-most honorees from any team in the country on The Sports Network/Fathead.com Football Championship Subdivision Preseason All-America Team that was announced Monday.
Five Salukis were represented on the first, second or third teams and they made up nearly half of the 11 honorees from the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Only Appalachian State (seven) had more players named to the preseason All-America teams.
Senior cornerback Korey Lindsey was the lone Saluki selected to the first team. Fullback John Goode and offensive tackle David Pickard were named to the second team while kicker Kyle Dougherty and safety Mike McElroy represented SIU on the third team.
For Lindsey and McElroy, who are both on the Buck Buchanan Award watch list, this is their third preseason All-America team that they have been named to. Between the two they have accounted for 23 interceptions in their careers as they both enter their senior seasons.
This is also the third preseason All-America team that Pickard has been named to. Goode and Dougherty have booth been selected to two preseason All-America teams now.
Southern Illinois begins preparation for the 2010 season on Thursday, Aug. 5 when players report for camp. The first practice will be held on Aug. 6.
Murray State kick returner Marcus Harris earned third-team honors.
The Sports Network/Fathead.com All-America Team will be announced on Dec. 22. In addition to the Payton, Buchanan and Robinson awards, TSN and Fathead.com team up for the FCS's most widely recognized weekly Top 25 poll and weekly awards honoring the nation's top offensive player, defensive player and special teams player. The Sports Network will present its 24th annual FCS Awards Presentation, sponsored by Fathead.com, on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011 in Frisco, Texas - the night before the FCS Championship Game.
