RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A bankruptcy judge has okayed the sale of three James River Coal Co. mining complexes to a subsidiary of Kentucky-based Blackhawk Mining. The sale includes the Hampden complex in West Virginia among other assets. The affected operations employ about 900 workers.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - An appeal is planned in a military court for a Fort Campbell soldier who was sentenced to death for killing two fellow service members and wounding 14 others in a 2003 grenade attack in Kuwait. Military officials say Hasan (ha-SAHN' ) K. Akbar (AK'-bar) will get his hearing Nov. 18 in the nation's capital.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Seven schools in Oldham County have won an energy star rating for top energy efficiency from the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet. The Oldham district's most recent renovation project at one elementary school led to a nearly 50 percent reduction in energy usage there.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Louisville will warm up for the ACC season with nonconference matchups against Big Ten schools Minnesota, Ohio State and Indiana along with its annual showdown against Kentucky. The Cardinals' schedule was released Wednesday and includes a Nov. 14 season opener against Minnesota, which is led by Louisville coach Rick Pitino's son Richard.
