Paducah's 50th Dogwood Trail lights up tonight

PADUCAH -

One of the signs of spring in Paducah is the blooming of the dogwood trees and one event that comes with the blooms is the Dogwood Trail.  While you can drive down the trail at anytime tonight the 50th Dogwood Trail will be lit up for the first time this year.

Several types of trees are beginning to bloom, but around here, the star of our outdoor springtime is the dogwood tree.

Dabney Haugh is the Chairman of the Dogwood Trail.  She said the dogwoods, known for their delicate flowers, start to blossom just after winter melts into spring.  It is the 50th year of the Dogwood Trail and because of that, Haugh hopes this year's turnout will be better than ever.

"I would like for us to break the record. I'd like for Paducah to glow this year," said Haugh.

Haugh said the Dogwood Trail turns into a magical site at night, giving Paducah that special shine.

"We want you to light up anything that's blooming, anything that's pretty in your yard, light up your front door, your tulips, your American flag," said Haugh.

It is a tradition, dating back to 1964, that Haugh hopes will continue for many more years to come.

The trail will light up beginning at sunset tonight and the lights will dim around 10.  The judging will be Tuesday and Wednesday nights, April 15 and 16th, between 7:30 and 9:30.

There is also a Community Trolley Ride on Thursday, April 17th.  Haugh said it will be an abbreviated Dogwood Trail Ride and there will be a fee of $1 per person. Rides will be on the hour at 7, 8 and 9 p.m. at the PATS station on 9th and Harrison. It is first come, first serve.
