Local growers see late strawberry season due to harsh winter

JOHNSON COUNTY, IL -
The region's strawberry harvest is delayed because of the harsh winter this year.
In New Burnside, grower Jerry Trover picked through his harvest.
"By this time, normally these would be red," said Trover.
The long and icy winter has delayed the spring harvest.
"Mother's Day is sort of the kicking off period of starting the strawberry season," said Trover.
Wednesday's haul was not a total loss, there were a few berries that were ripe for the picking.
"Just looking for the berries that are nice and red," said local grower Laura Alsip.
The juicy berries may be few and far between right now, but Alsip says when they are ready, you will definitely taste the difference.
"Hands down, the homegrown ones are much better," said Alsip.
Strawberries should be ready in time for your Memorial Day cookout.
