TALLAHASSEE, FL (MSU Media Relations) -
The Murray State Racers’ goal of playing well and advancing at the 2014 NCAA Women’s Golf East Regional Tournament hit a snag Friday with a rough second round at SouthWood Golf Course in Tallahassee, Florida.
MSU followed Thursday’s 307 with an uncharacteristic 316 in the second round for a 36-hole total of 623.
“This isn’t where we want to be, but I am seeing some positives out there,” MSU Head Coach Velvet Milkman said. “We want to end this on a positive note. Racers don’t quit. When things get tough, Racers fight back and I want them to learn that not only in golf, but in life. Tomorrow we’re going to fight back and have our best round yet, I really believe that.”
Delaney Howson fell off the pace in her quest for a spot in the NCAA Championship coming home with a 5-over-par 77. She fall off of the leaders’ pace into 66th place when her round ended. Howson, MSU’s lone senior and Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, has carded rounds of 72-77=149. Here at SouthWood GC, the top eight squads advance to the NCAA finals, as well as the top two individuals not associated with those teams.
“She has to regroup and end her career on a positive note,” Milkman said. “Regardless how this goes, nothing can take away what she has done coming through Murray State as one of the best players we’ve ever had.”
When the Racers ended round two play, Sydney Trimble was in 112th place after scores of 77-79=156, while Jackie Van Meter had scores of 77-82=159 for a spot in 120th place with teammate Abbi Stamper who had scores of 81-78=159. Sophie Hillier was in 125th place with scores of 83-85=168.
The Racers are in 23rd place and want to go out playing their best on Saturday.
“We got off to a slow start and maybe we pushed too hard thinking we had to make birdies,” Milkman added. “The back nine was tough and the wind got up. I want Delaney to go out on a good note and our underclassmen to leave knowing they can compete on this level." MSU’s tee times will begin Saturday afternoon from the 10th tee beginning at 12:10 p.m. Central Time.
