Posted: Updated:
POPE Co, IL - Governor Pat Quinn announced that $200,000 in federal funds will go to improve portions of the American Discovery Trail in Gallatin and Pope Counties.

The funds from the federal Recreational Trails Program are to increase the use of the trails.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) administers the Recreational Trails Program grants in Illinois.

The $200,000 will be used to re-route and improve 5.4 miles of horse and hiking trails in the Shawnee National Forest.

Two equestrian trail heads will also be developed to accommodate parking for five truck and horse trailers.

It's estimated that the total cost of the project will be $250,000.
