Every drop of donated blood goes to help those in need, and every blood transfusion has a story behind it. This one starts with our very own Local 6's meteorologist , Tori Shaw.
In 2010 her father, Dan Shaw, was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia or cancer of the blood.
"I said to him, look, I'm here with you on the first day and I'll be with you on the last day," said Tori.
He was her best friend and a very generous man, giving gallons of O positive blood to the American Red Cross every year. There was no question the day Tori got engaged she wanted her father to walk her down the aisle.
"He told the doctors keep me alive until that wedding day," said Tori.
So now he was on the other side. Dan received 200 units of blood and platelets over 2 years and because of that, Dan's wish was fulfilled.
"When he made it down there, down the aisle I looked at him and I said you made it pop, you made it," says Tori. "It was one of the greatest days of my life because my dad was there but it was also one of the saddest days because I knew after that day he didn't have much longer on this earth."
Dan passed away 6 days later. To honor him the Local 6 family rolled up their sleeves and gave blood on Friday.
"Without the donors donating to the Red Cross he wouldn't have been there for my wedding day," says Tori.
Local 6 gave 20 units of blood with 9 people donating for their first time. To find a blood drive in your area click here.
