The Southern Illinois Miners defeated the Windy City Thunderbolts 3-1 on Thursday afternoon at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood behind stellar starting pitching by left-hander Rick Teasley.
Southern Illinois once again jumped out in front, 1-0 in the first on a two-out RBI single by Chris Burke. The Miners would plate two more in the fourth inning on an RBI fielder’s choice by Matt Howard and an RBI double by Steve Marino.
That was all the Miners ended up needing thanks to their starter. After giving up a hit in the first and second innings, Teasley settled down to retire 10 batters in a row, including three straight “1-2-3” innings in the third, fourth and fifth. Teasley also sent the side down in order in the seventh inning before Windy City mounted a rally in the eighth.
A leadoff single and a one-out walk plus a fielder’s choice put runners at the corners with two outs. Jon Mestas then grounded a 2-2 pitch up the middle that second baseman Jon Eisen tried to flip to second for the force-out, but the ball was dropped, scoring a run. After another walk loaded the bases, closer Derrick Miramontes relieved Teasley and induced a flyout to right to keep the lead intact.
Miramontes would retire the side in order in the ninth for his third save of the season and the Miners’ first series win on the road. Burke and Marino both enjoyed two hits on the day for the Miners, while Teasley got his second win with 7 2/3 innings of work with only four hits and one unearned run allowed, striking out five.
The Miners return home for a six-game homestand, starting with a three-game series against the Normal CornBelters that starts on Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
