Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation that would allow $1.7 million in critical repairs to be made on the Big Muddy Levee in Jackson County.
After voters approved the funds for the project, legislative moves were needed to spend the funds on the levee repairs.
The bill will allow Jackson County to spend up to $1.7 million from a special fund to make repairs to the Levee. The levee protects 700 people of Grand Tower, but the Army Corps of Engineers determined that the levee repairs were ineligible for federal funds.
Governor Quinn says this is a matter of public safety for Illinoisans, "we need to do everything possible to make sure our communities are supported."
Congressman Enyart says, "Now, we need to focus on ensuring these funds are immediately dispensed to fix the levees in Jackson County."
