Benefit held for family of car crash victim

Posted: Updated:

A fish fry and silent auction was held for the family of Melanie Hays at the Melber Civic Center on Saturday.

Hays and her mother died in a car crash in early June.

One of Hays' daughters is still in the hospital.

Organizer Melanie Rogers says she wanted to show the Hays' family that they are loved and thought about every day.

"I just felt like she is looking down and she knows that the whole community is just wrapped their arms around her husband," said Rogers.

Missouri Highway Patrol Troopers say 22-year-old Austin Branham of Mansfield crossed a highway median and collided head-on with a van driven by Hays.

He also died.

Four other Hays family members were also injured.
