New guidelines to help protect pregnant women on the job

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON DC -

Pregnant women now have new protections against on-the-job discrimination. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently updated their 30-year-old guidelines.

The EEOC decided to change the guidelines after they saw a 46% increase in pregnancy-related complaints over the past 15 years.

The new guidelines make clear that any form of workplace discrimination or harassment against pregnant workers by employers is a form of sex discrimination and is illegal.

They prohibit employers from forcing pregnant workers to take leave and acknowledge that employers may have to provide light duty for pregnant workers.

The new guidelines will not only benefit women. When it comes to paternity leave, similarly situated men and women must be treated on the same terms.
