FANCY FARM, Ky. -
The 134th Fancy Farm Picnic is the talk of the town.
"Yeah, there's a lot of talk," said Ralph Stamper. Just about everywhere including at the local diner, people are serving up a plate of politics.
"How many Fancy Farm picnics have I been to? Since 1960, all of them," Stamper said. He lives in Fancy Farm.
He's a Fancy Farm regular and it's pretty easy to run into others.
"I started to work at the picnic myself when I was about 14 years old," said Bernard Hobbs. He owns the local food and hardware store just up the road. "I think we're honored that people come to our community that day to listen to the politicians," he said.
Daniel Burgess is the picnic chairman. He said while Fancy Farm may be a small town, it is the perfect site for the unofficial kick off to the political season. "We don't get the word Fancy Farm for nothing," Burgess said.
In just a few weeks thousands of people are expected to gather at Fancy Farm to hear politicians from both sides of the aisle speak. This year is expected to be bigger than ever as Republican Senator Mitch McConnell and Democratic candidate Alison Lundergan-Grimes have both agree to speak at the event. The two are running for a seat in the U.S. Senate.
