MARSHALL COUNTY, KY -
Today kids in Marshall County are getting into some fun before they get back into the classroom. Marshall County students will be heading back in about a week now. To gear up for the return, the district held their annual back to school bash.
It is not time for these students to go back to school yet, but this line wrapped around Marshall County High School was like it was the first day of classes. More than one-thousand students and their parents took part in the district's free day of giveaways.
Benton Central Family Resource Center Coordinator Melissa Elrod said planning for back to school can be difficult, so this event helps ease parent's worries.
"There was a need to help out with school supplies you know there are some families that there are tough times and they couldn't get them. If you have more than one child it really adds up," said Elrod.
Stacey Stearns said it is tough financially to afford supplies for her three kids. She said the bash is not only fun, but it makes school affordable.
"They are so excited about getting back in school that this just motivates them," said Stearns.
It is Josh and Kimberly Lightfoot's first year here.
"We are new to this whole school thing it's real exciting," said Lightfoot.
Their son, Grayson is heading to kindergarten.
"We are exploring and kind of saying OK what is there that can help us and make this a little bit easier and put some of this little nervous things to rest," said Grayson.
Helping families financially while also easing the pressure of any first day jitters.
The district handed out free back packs and the kids were able to fill them with supplies. There were also free eye and dental screenings.
