SIKESTON, MO -
Sikeston Department of Public Safety is investigating a crash involving a death of a three year-old boy.
Friday night officers responded to 110 N. Ingram Road in reference to a motor vehicle that struck a pedestrian. When officers arrived they found a vehicle hit a three year-old child and his ankle was still partially pinned under the tire.
Emergency workers were able to free the child and immediately began life saving procedures. Because of the extent of the injuries, the child was taken to an area trauma center. DPS later learned that the child died during his trip to the hospital.
During the investigation, police learned a relative returned home and parked across the street. The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash told officers he slowed down when he saw the children cross the road. At the last moment, as he was about to pass the home, the three year-old boy ran in front of his vehicle. Police says the child was trying to cross the road, but was lagging behind the other children. The driver said he was not able to avoid hitting the child. A witness at the scene said it appeared the driver did everything he could to avoid the child but there was simply no time to react.
The boy has been identified as Tyren Miller.
