FRANKFORT, Ky -

A new contest from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet seeks student art for an Adopt-a-Highway calendar.

The contest is open to submissions of creative works from elementary, middle and high school students in the commonwealth. It's aimed at encouraging children not to litter. The KYTC hopes it will also get kids to spread the message of environmental awareness to their peers.

"Our hope is to bring about a change in attitudes and behaviors concerning a growing problem of litter," Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock said in a statement. "A pleasing change of scenery can be accomplished with your child's help."

A certificate of authenticity is needed along with the entry form. Those can be found at http://adopt-a-highway.ky.gov/ or by contacting the KYTC at (502)546-3419.

Entries must be in the mail by September 30.
