MASSAC COUNTY, IL -
There is still a lot of aesthetic work that need to be done before the Massac Theatre can reopen. But, the president of the organization in charge of resurrecting the building is hopeful it will reopen in the two years.
"The Massac Theatre, in my opinion, is a very important building in Massac County," said 'Save The Massac' President Lisa Gower.
She's in charge of the repair work, making sure the marquee lights up again. "I like to say this is my grandmother's theater, my mother's theater, it's my theater," Gower told Local 6.
But there is a long list of repairs. Gower said a wall needs work - it's leaking and there are several cracks. "We have a wall that needs to be repaired as well as a crack on the outside and that has to be done before we do everything else," she said.
Gower also hopes to rebuild the stage and refurbish the seats. The building has no power, but there is a new roof. Gower said she's tackling all this work for the children in her neighborhood.
"We have a lost generation there of kids who have not had the opportunity to go to a movie or a play in their own town," Gower said.
'Save The Massac' will host a fundraiser Monday, August 25th to raise money for the repair work. There will be a pork burger lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in front of the Massac Theatre. Plates are $7, including the sandwich, chips, a drink and dessert.
