Men ditch shaving to help save lives

Posted: Updated:
CARBONDALE, IL -

Some local men are getting hairy to save lives.

It is No Shave November, that means men everywhere are letting it all go to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society.

Flyers are scattered on a local bar and the beards are starting to come it.

"It's already starting to get a little itchy," said participant and ACS staff partner Caleb Nehring.

Team Whiskey Whiskers in Carbondale, Illinois is assembled.

Nehring says the itch is for a good cause.

"When somebody is diagnosed with cancer, hair is very important because a lot of times they lose it during treatment, chemo or radiation," said Nehring.

Jay Jansen is growing his "stache" in honor of his late grandfather.

"I think it's one of those diseases that has touched everybody's life," said Jansen.

Jansen says his face is already getting a lot of attention.

"I'm just trying to be as obnoxious as I can so people ask me why I'm doing it," said Jansen.

He is hoping attention translates into dollars for the American Cancer Society that could save lives.

We will check back with the Whiskey Whiskers at the end of No Shave November to see how the beards turned out and how much they raised.
