Crews preparing for winter weather

Posted: Updated:

Crews were laying brine on roadways Friday, just in time for the first winter event of the season.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesperson Keith Todd says it serves as a good dry run for crews.

"This gives us a chance to get geared up for the actual start of winter," said, Keith Todd.

So before there's wet snow and ice on the road, all the trucks, salt, brine, and crews will be ready to go.

The brine put down on Friday is mixed with calcium chloride. It helps the solution better stick to the roadway, even when it rains.

Mason DeJarnett appreciates the brine, and its purpose.

"I'd rather see it out now then I would look up and nothing be there and be sliding all over the place," said Mason DeJarnett.

So far, this is gearing up to be one of the coldest Novembers on record, but we'll have to wait until the end of the month for complete numbers.

The coldest November on record in the Paducah area was back in 1976.
