Turkey Total donations help in time for holidays

Posted: Updated:
PADUCAH, Ky - Thanksgiving is this Thursday, but Tuesday is the last day to donate to the turkey total drive.

So many of you have been so generous all ready, but there's still an enormous need in our area.

The numbers are still rolling in, and here at banks, they have 216 donated turkeys that are distributed through local charities.

A local business- Swift and Staley donated $4,000 worth of turkeys, and are challenging families and other business to do the same.

Captain Joe Crawford with the Salvation Army says its unprecedented for a business to make such a large donation at once for one drive, and encourage others to do the same. He says it was a task buying and transporting thousands of dollars' worth of turkeys, "As soon as we were unloading them and counting them they were going out the other side."

He says the generous donation is making a great difference. When Crawford checked with the national level Salvation Army, they told him to use all the money to buy turkeys, but they were expecting all the 223 turkeys to go out the door quickly.

Pam Edwards received a turkey on Monday and says she wished everyone was as happy as she was, "I wasn't expecting a turkey at all, not at all... So it makes me smile a lot."

Both she and Crawford know there are those who can't afford to enjoy the symbolic Thanksgiving staple, "To see their face light up when they get to receive a turkey and they get to pick it up. Turkeys are always so much bigger than they think it's going to be."

But they both know how the turkeys make a difference in peoples' lives.

If you need a turkey, the service organizations like the Salvation Army in Paducah, the United Way, and the First United Methodist Church in Southern Illinois and Northwest Tennessee are the agencies distributing them.

This is gearing up to be one of the biggest years to date, the total so far with 657 turkeys.
Again,Tuesday is the last day of our turkey total campaign.

Stores in West Kentucky, Southern Illinois, and Northwest Tennessee are all participating.
