Popular recreational area wants public input

With over 830,000 visitors every year Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge is one of the ten busiest in the country, and now they want to improve on that number.

"People tell us they love to fish, people tell us they love to hike," said Kim King-Wrenn. "Some people come and stay a long time at the campground each summer, but we have limited resources and we have to figure out where to put those resources."

Veteran James Selph says he has been coming to the refuge for years to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

"It's a beautiful area, and when I come out here I'm just one on one with God," said James Selph.

As an avid angler he could spend all day by these waters, but someone who battles diabetes the lack of facilities keeps him home.

"I would like to see a better bathroom setup," said Selph. "I know you're going to have kids that are going to be destructive with it, but I think if we start charging parents more on that the kids would get more understanding."

"It can be tricky because a lot of things we need to do are facilities wise, but we definitely want to repair some of the boat ramps," said King-Wrenn. "Our boat ramps are old, and very much used, so that's the top of the list."

There is a meeting Monday night until 7:00 P.M. at John A. Logan Community College where you can make your voice heard on what you want to see next at the park.
