Local utility warning customers of payment scam

Posted: Updated:

A local utility wants to warn its customers of a payment scam.

West Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation (WKRECC) says a scammer called a small business owner and claimed to represent the utility.

The scammer told the member that their electric bill was overdue and must be paid immediately to avoid termination of service and a lengthy delay to reconnect.

The scammer then tried to convince the customer to buy a prepaid card to settle the bill.

WKRECC does not ask for pre-paid debit cards for payment and always provides ample time for customers to make payment before services is terminated.

Members with questions about their account are always encouraged to call the utility at (270) 247-1321.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of payment fraud is encouraged to report the problem to local police and the Federal Trade Commission.
