Local miners issuing challenge to help foster children
GALATIA, IL -
'Tis the season of giving and a local group is trying to make the season a little brighter for 350 foster children in our region.
On Wednesday, American Coal donated a little more than $15,000 to Lutheran Social Services and they're hoping to inspire you to dig into your pockets.
"Anytime you're taken away from your family and put in foster care it's tough," Michael Grant. "We just wanted to give back a little bit."
Theresa Rone of Lutheran Social Services says that the miners gave more than a little bit.
American Coal's $15,000 donation shattered their $6,000 goal, and will help put presents under the tree.
"They don't have bare necessities like clothes and coats and gloves," Theresa Rone. "We're trying to give them what they need and we're trying to give them a little bit of what they want to make sure that they're getting some type of toy for Christmas to open."
The giving spirit didn't stop there.
Now the miners are trying to turn $15,000 into over $100,000 with a friendly challenge.
"If we could challenge all of the coal mines in the surrounding areas then maybe none of these children would do without anything," said Elva "Toot" Arview. "We're asking everybody to do this and all of the kids will be taken care of."
