Protesters make their way toward the Capitol

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON (AP) - Thousands of protesters are marching in Washington to bring attention to the deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of police.

Civil rights organizations are holding the march to the Capitol on Saturday with the families of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, two unarmed black men who died in incidents with white police officers.

The rally was interrupted briefly by a group of protesters mostly in their 20s, who took the stage with a bullhorn. They announced that they were from Ferguson, Missouri - where Brown died - and demanded to speak. Many on the ground supported them, and one was allowed to address the crowd.

Some in the group called the rally disappointing, with a watered-down messaged. They told the crowd the movement was started by young people and they wanted to see action, not a show.

Rally organizers it an unnecessarily divisive interruption.

While protesters rally in Washington, other groups will march around the country, including a large event planned in New York.
