FRANKFORT, Ky -

A Clark County couple has been charged with stealing copper wire from highway lights.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) says Aaron Ferguson and his wife, Cindy Ferguson, are facing several felony charges in the string of thefts.

The couple is accused of stealing copper from lighting systems on Kentucky interstates and parkways in nine counties. The thefts occurred between April and November of this year.

Both Aaron and Cindy are facing 22 counts of theft by unlawful taking or disposition amounting to $500 or more but less than $10,000 and 22 counts of fire-degree criminal mischief.

Aaron faces an additional 45 counts of being a persistent felony offender. All 89 counts are Class D felonies, each punishable by 1 to 5 years in prison.

The charges were developed with the assistance of an informant. Earlier this year, KYTC and Kentucky State Police offered a $2,500 reward for information that lead to criminal prosecution of those responsible for stealing copper wire from highway lights.

In light of this recent case, KYTC will keep the reward in place to try and defer further copper thefts in the state.
