Local police want residents to be on alert for fraud

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -

The Poplar Bluff Police Department wants residents to be on alert for a fraud.

The department says a suspect is trying to coerce victims into paying money for a nonexistent bond.

In one complaint, the suspect identified himself as "Deputy Jeff Rolland with Butler County," and threatened to arrest the victim if they did not pay a $800 bond using prepaid credit cards.

In another complaint, the suspect posed as a member of the victim's family, said they had been arrested, and asked that the victim pay their bond using a prepaid credit card.

Law enforcement agencies do not collect bond money over the phone.

Anyone who receives such a call is encouraged to hang up and call their local law enforcement agency.
