Fire department fined for incident involving ice bucket challenge

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -

State regulators have fined the City of Campbellsville Fire Department $25,000 for improper training and equipment in an incident that killed one firefighter and injured three more while trying to help a college marching band participate in the ice bucket challenge.

The Kentucky Office of Occupational Safety and Health issued the citation last week. The fire department has until Feb. 2 to contest it.

State officials say the department did not make sure firefighters wore protective helmets designed to reduce electric shocks and allowed untrained people too close to a power line.

Forty-one-year-old Tony Grider died after the ladder he was on got too close to a power line while firefighters were attempting to spray water on the Campbellsville University marching band.

Campbellsville Fire Chief Kyle Smith declined to comment.
