Rejuvenating Anna's Main Street

ANNA, IL -

Anna, Illinois city leaders are rejuvenating their downtown by giving it a more historic feel.

Inside Kiki's Coffee House it's warm and quaint, but owner Kathy Bryan says outside her door it's a different story.

More than 12,000 cars drive down Main Street in Anna every day. Bryan says those cars won't stop for coffee if Main Street doesn't shape up.

"Make it  little more appealing, a little more inviting. Our sidewalks are cracked, they've been patched," said Bryan.

City administrator Steve Guined says plans have been made to do just that.

"It will include sidewalks, green space, benches, new trash cans, banners, and some lighting improvements," said Guined.

Anything yellow will also be switched to a more classic black. The idea is to bring historic downtown Anna back to life. Bryan hopes Anna's new image will attract new start-ups and in turn boost her sales.

"You know, when somebody's shopping at one of the other businesses and they walk by and they're like 'Hey, let's grab a cup of coffee,'" said Bryan.

Guined says the $500,000 project in an investment in the city and it's small businesses. The downtown rehab project is being funded through both state grants and the city budget. You can expect to see the finished product by the end of the summer.
